World Cancer Day takes place every year today, on February 4. It’s a day filled with hope, honor and recognition for everything people fighting the disease have gone through. This year, Princess Kate Middleton marked the day by sharing an update on her cancer journey. We have her entire statement and the powerful picture one of her kids took below.
Kate Middleton’s World Cancer Day post
Middleton posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing herself bundled up in the woods, arms outstretched.
The Princess of Wales captioned it: “Don’t forget to nurture all that which lies beyond the disease. C,” and included the hashtag #WorldCancerDay, before sharing that the picture had been taken by none other than her six-year-old son Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Wales.
The post follows Middleton’s announcement, three weeks prior, that she is in remission after an 11-month battle with cancer.
“As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal,” Middleton continued in her statement. “I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
In that same post, the princess shared that she would be taking on the role of “Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden [Hospital].”
“My hope is that by supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives and transform the experience of all those impacted by cancer.”
A look back at her cancer journey
Middleton publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 after nearly a month of public speculation about her absence.
“In January [2024], I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous. The surgery was successful,” the princess said in her video statement. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team, therefore, advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
Following that, Middleton was notably absent from several royal events due to her treatment. She then announced on June 14, 2024, to let people know that she was “making good progress” with her treatment.
“Anyone going through chemotherapy will know there are good days and bad days,” she continued. “On the days I feel well enough, it is a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity, as well as starting to do a little work from home.”
“Thank you so much for your continued understanding and to all of you who have so bravely shared your stories with me.”
One day after that statement, Middleton stepped out with her family to celebrate the Trooping the Colour. It was her first public appearance since announcing her diagnosis.
September 9, 2024, was an especially significant day for the princess because it was the day that she announced she was “cancer-free.”
“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” Middleton said in her video. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
Middleton then proceeded to make various public appearances, including visits to the hospital cancer floor and the royal family’s annual Christmas festivities.
Perhaps the most exciting day for Middleton was on January 15, 2025, because that was the day she announced she was officially in remission.
As of publication, Middleton has not shared which type of cancer she had or what stage it was. She has also not commented on whether her doctors believe the cancer could return.
