Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have welcomed a baby girl—and her name pays tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Family shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), revealing details about the newborn’s arrival and her special connection to the royal lineage. We have their entire statement, plus details on Princess Beatrice’s pregnancy, below.
Princess Beatrice and her husband welcome a baby girl
On January 29, The Royal Family announced the birth of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. Born on January 22 at 12:57 p.m.
Princess Athena weighed just 4 pounds, 5 ounces at birth, as she arrived a few weeks early.
“The King and Queen, and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news,” says The Royal Family’s social media account.
After the initial palace announcement, Mozzi also took to his own social media account to share that his daughter “is tiny and absolutely perfect.”
“A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time.”
This is the couple’s second child together and third overall, and according to the palace, “the family are enjoying spending time together with Athena’s older siblings, Wolfie and Sienna.”
The sweet meaning behind Athena’s name and her royal status
Naming a royal baby is no small task, and it seems as though Princess Beatrice and Mozzi decided to use their newest child’s name as a way to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth II was the mother of Prince Andrew, Duke of York. Prince Andrew then married Sarah, Duchess of York, and they welcomed Princess Beatrice together in 1988, making her Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter and King Charles’s niece.
Although Athena is part of the royal family, she will not receive a British royal title. According to a 1917 decree by King George V, only the children and grandchildren of the reigning monarch automatically receive prince or princess titles.
Like her siblings, Athena will not have a British royal title. However, through her father’s lineage, she holds an Italian aristocratic title. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi is the eldest son of Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, making him an Italian noble. When he married Princess Beatrice, she gained the titles ‘Contessa’ and ‘Nobile Donna’—titles that are now passed down to their children.
A look back at Princess Beatrice’s pregnancy
Princess Beatrice’s pregnancy was announced on October 1, 2024, via X, and according to Hello!, there was a typo in the initial announcement.
According to the publication, the initial posting read “Her Royal Highes,” instead of “Her Royal Highness,” however, no one from the palace ever commented on those rumors.
From there on, the princess continued to attend various events, including an investment conference in Saudi Arabia last October.
Following that, Princess Beatrice reportedly received some undisclosed medical advice that caused her to miss several Christmas events. The medical problem is also believed to be the reason her baby came early.
Princess Beatrice and Mozzi have been married for four years as of July 2024, and it is unclear as of publication if they plan to have any more kids.
