Jordin Sparks has conquered the world of entertainment, making waves as a contestant on American Idol, as well as with her post-win albums — 2007’s self-titled record and 2009’s Battlefield. She also embarked on an acting career, starring in films like Hallmark’s A Christmas Treasure (2021) and the musical movie Sparkle (2012). And now, Sparks is giving back to underserved youth by partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS) and Macy’s.
Sparks rose to stardom after competing on the sixth season of American Idol and being crowned the youngest winner in the series’ history at age 17, with her reign as a celebrity only rising. First for Women recently had a chance to speak with Sparks regarding the holidays, her new song “S-N-O-W” and her partnership with BBBS. Learn about her favorite holiday memories and see photos of her BBBS event at Macy’s!
FIRST FOR WOMEN (FFW): What is the one thing you always looked forward to each holiday season growing up?
Jordin Sparks: I’ve been on the road since I was a teenager, and I still look forward to spending time with my family and my people the most. It’s still the same now although being able to rest has been made a priority!
FFW: Are there any traditions your family had during the holidays that you’ve continued in your adult life?
JS: Definitely, I love baking with my son DJ. He loves helping mommy in the kitchen and together we bake just as I did with my Mom and Nana. Also, singing. Whether the music was playing while we baked, on the radio or I was putting on a show, we always sang.
FFW: What are your earliest memories of the holidays? Does anything stick out to you?
Sparks: I remember when I was 4 years old seeing the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. That show made quite an impression on me as you can imagine! My dad was playing football for the New York Giants back then, and New York City is so magical that time of year!
FFW: What do the holidays mean to you?
Sparks: They mean wonder to me. I love that people have more smiles on their faces and are a little bit kinder this time of year!
FFW: In your new song, “S-N-O-W,” you’re wishing for the snow to come faster. Were you always wishing for a white Christmas growing up and did you enjoy the snow?
Sparks: I basically grew up in Arizona where it didn’t snow for Christmas unless you went up North. I’m still mesmerized by how beautiful it is when I do get the chance to see it fall.
FFW: What inspired your new compilation EP, Growin’ Up Holiday?
Sparks: Everyone involved loves Christmas and loves kiddos. We wanted to make something fun that even the littlest elf can sing and enjoy!
FFW: What about the holidays do you most look forward to now?
Sparks: Being with my family, sleep and reflection. Life moves so fast and this time of year I can truly look back on all the incredible memories made and goals accomplished. And then be surrounded by those who love me most.
FFW: In partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and Macy’s. What made you want to give back to underserved youth?
Sparks: I believe mentorship is extremely important. Especially today. As I reflect on this season of giving, I’m thinking of all of the mentors in my life—people who gave me the gift of their time, encouragement and belief. We all need someone who is going to affirm us, guide us and provide safe spaces to grow. BBBS has been and continues to do just that. And I want to lend my voice to places like that. Macy’s and I have a longstanding relationship, and I’ve always enjoyed working with them. It is a dream for me that they are collaborating together!!
This December, Macy’s has a special round-up and donation campaign in-store and online at macys.com, to support Big Brothers Big Sisters and create more impactful mentoring experiences for young people. I also just joined a group of BBBS of Orange County, and Inland Empire mentors and mentees “Bigs” and “Littles” for a holiday book reading and shopping experience at Macy’s South Coast Plaza. It’s always so inspiring to see how mentorship can spark potential in young people. Hope everyone will join me in supporting youth mentorship this holiday season!
