Bazinga! The fan-favorite The Big Bang Theory is officially coming back to air during Nickelodeon’s ‘Nick at Nite’ programming and on MTV. The hilariously scientific series will be available to watch on both channels in the coming weeks.
The Big Bang Theory will begin airing on Nickelodeon starting December 24, with the first episode being season 2 episode 11 titled, “The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis,” which is a Christmas-themed episode. The episode focuses on Sheldon (Jim Parsons) struggling to find the right gift for Penny (Kaley Cuoco). Following this debut, every episode of The Big Bang Theory will be available on a rotation during the “Nick at Nite” programming hours.
On January 1, MTV will welcome the series with open arms by hosting “MTV’s New Years with a Bang,” a non-stop marathon of every episode from season 3 of The Big Bang Theory. Following this, MTV will air all of the episodes every Saturday and Sunday, beginning on January 4.
“We are thrilled to welcome The Big Bang Theory back into the Paramount family, bolstering the comedy lineup for both Nick at Nite and MTV,” said Laurel Weir, Executive Vice President and head of programming at Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks. “Bringing engaging and culturally resonant content to fans is our priority, and the addition of The Big Bang Theory to our robust comedy slate across both networks brings our audience some of the best comedies in television history.”
A look back at the success of ‘The Big Bang Theory’
Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, The Big Bang Theory was a massive hit when it aired from 2007 to 2019. The series follows awkward physicists Leonard and Sheldon who are able to explain physics but can’t get through normal social situations unscathed.
The series released 279 episodes in total and received 10 Emmy awards during its run.
Exploring the ‘Big Bang’ spinoffs
When the show came to an end in May 2019, fans were disappointed, but Lorre and Big Bang executive producer Steven Molaro had already gotten positive reviews from their next show, a spinoff titled Young Sheldon, which follows a young Sheldon on his journey through life with an extraordinary mind.
Released in 2017 while The Big Bang Theory was still on the air, fans quickly fell in love with the younger version of Sheldon Cooper, portrayed by Iain Armitage, and his immediate family.
The spinoff aired for 7 seasons before coming to an end earlier this year. But of course, that was not the end as Lorre, Molaro and Steve Holland were quick to follow up with another fan-favorite series: Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. This third spinoff in the Big Bang universe was released in October and veers off in another direction, following Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie (Montana Jordan) and his life with new wife, Mandy (Emily Osment—Haley Joel Osment’s sister) and their child.
