TAE BO Is Back With a New Workout Video From Billy Blanks | First For Women

Billy Blanks, the martial arts legend and fitness icon, is a name synonymous with high-energy workouts and a positive mindset. His creation, TAE BO, a dynamic fitness program blending martial arts and dance, swept the nation in the ‘90s, energizing living rooms and inspiring countless individuals to get moving.

Now, Blanks is back, teaming up with Yahoo to bring a nostalgic workout experience to a new generation this month. It marks the first official TAE BO video in over 10 years, inviting viewers to step back in time and join Blanks for a 25-minute workout that’s pure ‘90s fun.

In an exclusive interview, the iconic fitness guru spoke with First for Women about the evolution of TAE BO, his partnership with Yahoo and timeless fitness tips to keep you motivated this holiday season.

What is TAE BO?

If you’re unfamiliar with TAE BO, think of it as a cross between martial arts and dance. This high-energy routine combines techniques like kicks, punches and blocks with dance-like movements. Blanks, a renowned martial artist and fitness expert, developed TAE BO in the 1970s. It gained immense popularity in the 1990s through infomercials and workout videos, captivating audiences with its energetic routines and ability to provide a full-body workout.

What nostalgic exercise routines have you tried?

So, what are the health benefits of TAE BO? For one, its high-intensity nature helps burn more calories (without running on the treadmill) and improves cardiovascular health. The combination of martial arts movements and dance-like choreography engages multiple muscle groups, which increases strength and flexibility. The focus on core strength and balance contributes to better posture and overall body coordination.

Below, we break down what Blanks had to say about achieving your fitness goals and the resurgence of his fun ‘90s workout with a modern spin.

Billy Blanks: TAE BO sparked a fitness revolution that inspired millions, and bringing it back with Yahoo is nothing short of sensational. But while I’m proud of that legacy, I’m all about blending it with today’s fitness trends. The industry’s constantly evolving, and I embrace new tools, tech and approaches to keep workouts fresh and effective. My goal is to keep the energy, empowerment and community of TAE BO alive while making fitness fun and accessible for everyone, no matter how it evolves. It’s the ultimate way to ride the wave of 90s nostalgia while inspiring a new generation to join the fun.

FFW: How does it feel to help people achieve their fitness goals?

BB: It’s a blessing. It’s incredibly rewarding and exciting to see how far we’ve come! Today, we’re blending that same passion for movement with a new focus on engaging new generations, who are inspired by the nostalgia of the ‘90s and early 2000s. Also knowing that TAE BO has inspired millions to take control of their health and push past their limits is a dream come true. I’m honored to have been part of their journey as helping people feel stronger, more confident and empowered in their fitness is the best feeling in the world.

BB: The 90s were a golden era for fitness, and I wanted to bring that energy back with a fresh twist. Partnering with Yahoo for my first TAE BO class in 10 years was the perfect way to reconnect with fans and introduce a whole new generation to the power of movement.

FFW: What can viewers expect from following your new TAE BO workout?

FFW: What’s the secret to achieving long-term fitness goals?

BB: The key to long-term fitness success is consistency and finding what you love. When you enjoy your workouts, it’s so much easier to stay motivated. Set small, achievable goals, keep it exciting and celebrate every win. Remember, fitness isn’t a destination, but rather a lifestyle! If you can get yourself to focus and be in the right mindset, you can really achieve anything. One of my favorite sayings is, ‘I look and act just like my mind and will.’ Most people think of it as, ‘I look and act just like my body.’ It is easy to get discouraged, but I tell people that they should get encouraged and once you focus and put yourself in the right mindset–your life can change right in front of your eyes.”

FFW: What are your top tips for staying active and healthy during the holidays?

BB: It all starts with your mindset. Make sure to set the tone before the holidays even hit. Ensure that you’re prioritizing movement as a way to feel good, not just burn calories. Even short workouts, like my TAE BO session with Yahoo, can keep your energy up and stress down. Always remember to make it fun! Turn family time into fitness time or squeeze in 10 minutes before your holiday plans. Stay consistent and you’ll feel stronger and more balanced all season long. A good tip I like to share is to encourage people to go for a long walk in the morning to start off the day. Gets the blood flowing and allows you to kickstart your day with some fresh air!

FFW: What’s next for you and TAE BO?

BB: Following this collaboration with Yahoo, I’m looking forward to the next chapter of TAE BO, which continues the fun and intensity of the class, now with the magic of VR. We are rebooting TAE BO in virtual reality, and it is called TAE BO Reboot. TAE BO Reboot is a groundbreaking fitness/entertainment experience presented within 21st-century technology. People will experience magnificent, sensational landscapes and virtual environments while enjoying a spatial fitness exercise experience never before possible. It is suitable for kids and adults.
