The royal family has had quite a tough year. Both Kate Middleton and King Charless III were diagnosed with cancer, and most recently Queen Camilla recalled that she was suffering from a chest infection, which has caused her to miss various royal appearances. And now Prince William is opening up how the whole thing has been for him, saying it’s quite ‘brutal’. Keep scrolling to read his entire statement.
What Prince William has to say about Kate Middleton and King Charles
Two months after revealing that Middleton had completed her chemotherapy treatment, and 10 months after King Charles announced his cancer diagnosis, Prince William opened up to the press about how awful the whole journey has been for him.
“It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life,” the heir to the British throne said on November 7. “Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”
During Middleton’s treatment, the princess chose to mainly remain out of the spotlight, whereas her husband and father-in-law continued to make various public appearances and attend different events—including Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. But despite all the smiles they show the press, William says this year has been extremely channeling.
“From a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal,” said William.
Despite all their challenges though, the prince is still in awe of his family saying “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done.”
He also revealed that despite his seemingly calm demeanor he “Couldn’t be less relaxed this year,” before saying that he knew he had no choice but to continue on despite the cancer diagnosis.
“It’s more a case of just crack on and you’ve got to keep going. I enjoy my work and I enjoy pacing myself and keeping sure that I have got time for my family, too.”
Prince William, Kate Middleton and King Charles are expected to attend the Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall this weekend, but it remains unclear if Queen Camilla will be there.
The latest updates on Kate Middleton and King Charles’ cancer
In early September, the princess did release a video featuring herself, William and their three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to reveal that she has completed her chemotherapy treatment.
“As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment,” the princess said. “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”
“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
Middleton ended the video by saying “To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey—I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.”
When it comes to King Charles cancer, the palace has remained more tight-lipped than they have about Middleton’s. Unlike the princess, the king never shied away from his royal duties and instead continued to travel around the world both alone and with his wife Camilla.
The king is currently 75 years old, with a birthday coming up on November 14. Kate Middleton, a.k.a. Catherine, Princess of Wales is 42.
