Patrick and Brittany Mahomes are one of the most talked about couples in the National Football League (NFL) thanks to their adorable kids, looks and even their friendship with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. But who are they, really? And what do they really think about being in the spotlight? We explore all of that and more just in time for Sunday night’s AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and the Bills.
Who are Patrick and Brittany Mahomes? Inside their love story
Patrick and Brittany are high school sweethearts who met in Texas in 2012. At the time, she was a year older than him, but according to Patrick, that age difference didn’t stop him from being a “normal teenage kid showing up at the family dinner type stuff and being nervous and everything.”
Following their time in high school, Brittany attended the University of Texas at Tyler, and Patrick attended Texas Tech University, meaning that the couple had to have a long-distance relationship for a while, hoping that their love would be strong enough to keep them afloat.
And it was! After getting their respective degrees, the couple reunited and would soon celebrate Patrick being signed to The Kansas City Chiefs in 2017.
“I knew there was a chance, but for this to actually happen, you never expect it,” Patrick said after being drafted. “You want to be drafted high but to be drafted high into an organization like the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s like a dream to me.”
Since becoming the team’s starting quarterback, Patrick has won three Super Bowls in 2020, 2024 and 2024, and is hoping to get a fourth in 2025.
“For me, it’s go out there, play hard, try to do whatever I can to win the football game, and then live with the results based on my effort and how I play the game, and that’s what we preach here in Kansas City,” the quarterback said. “I just try to play football at the end of the day.”
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes: their growing family
Following their engagement in September 2020, Patrick and Brittany have welcomed three children together, with their most recent one being born just a couple of weeks ago.
“Being able to be a dad and being able to get married here soon, I’m truly thankful for that.” Patrick said in 2021. “I mean, [winning] the Super Bowl was awesome as well, but those things change your life, and it’s bigger than football.“
Something special about the Mahomes kids is that they are each named after various metals: Sterling, Patrick “Bronze” and Golden, and according to Brittany, “It’s a very special moment wherever I get to bring them to the game and they get to watch their dad play football.”
Inside Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’s wedding and marriage
Patrick and Brittany wed in March 2022, with their eldest daughter, Sterling, serving as the flower girl.
“I have a great wife. I think that helps out a ton. She helps me out a ton by taking stuff off my plate,” Patrick said in 2023. “I have great people around me, and I can be Patrick Mahomes. I can be myself, the same person I’ve grown up being — and luckily, that’s won a couple of Super Bowls.”
In that same interview with PEOPLE, Brittany echoed similar thoughts, praising her husband for everything he does. “I think he’s done such an amazing job at balancing his work life and his at-home life. I think he’s really switched around his priorities and figured it out. He’s the best father ever.”
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes’s friendship with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce
Ever since Taylor Swift started dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, people have wondered if the couple was going to befriend Patrick and Brittany. And they did!
The foursome has been seen partying together, enjoying a bite and attending some of Swift’s concerts. They all also went to the 2024 Men’s US Open Finals together.
“It’s so much fun to be on a team with him [Patrick] because he’s always going to take the bull by the horns and be the most accountable,” Kelce said. “When the team needs him the most, he steps up in ways he hasn’t before. It happens year in, year out.”
What’s next for Patrick and Brittany Mahomes?
Aside from raising their three children, Patrick and Brittany are currently preparing for the AFC Championship game on Sunday, January 26, between the Chiefs and the Bills.
There is a lot of speculation going into that game, though, since it is widely believed that the referees often favor the Chiefs. Patrick has since denied those claims, saying, “I mean, obviously, I’ve been on both sides of it as far as how I felt the calls were made, but at the end of the day, man, those guys are doing their best to make the best calls and keep it to where the players are making the plays in the game. And that’s what decides the outcome.”
“Obviously, there was a call here or there that people didn’t agree with, but at the same time, I think there were a lot of other plays that really decided the outcome of that football game.”
You can watch Patrick and the Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills on CBS or stream it on Paramount+.
