MedAxiom releases 2024 Cardiovascular APP Compensation and Utilization Report

MedAxiom, the premier source for cardiovascular organizational performance solutions, has released its 2024 Cardiovascular Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Compensation and Utilization Report, which includes 2023 data from 90 provider organizations – a robust response rate. The report features a foreword from Ginger Biesbrock, DSC, PA-C, FACC, executive vice president of MedAxiom Care Transformation Services, encouraging practical applications of the report’s data to design and implement team-based care models.

Report Highlights:

  1. Median compensation for cardiology APPs has continued to increase year-over-year, with a 15% increase from 2019 to 2023.
  2. The APP per physician full-time (FT) employee ratio is similar to last year’s report for cardiology, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery.
  3. Almost 50% of programs report that an APP leads the APP team, with APP leadership remaining a contributor to program success.
  4. More than 90% of respondents reported that their APPs work in the ambulatory setting, up from 80% in 2023.
  5. Specialty care continues to benefit from a team-based care model, with 62% of programs deploying APPs specifically for lipid and/or prevention management.

Carefully designed team-based care models with APPs at the helm can alleviate workflow challenges, create a flexible culture and drive subspecialized care to deliver better outcomes. Staff retention is necessary to make these teams sustainable and effective. This report defines appropriate compensation, incentives, shift structures and performance management to retain and motivate APPs – important leaders in cardiovascular care.”
