We often think of actress Maggie Q for her work in films and TV shows like Designated Survivor, Nikita, Divergent, Bosch and more, but it turns out she’s done much more than that, including founding the nutrition company ActivatedYou.
The company’s origins lie in the actress’s own struggles with her gut health and her desire for a more natural solution that would work for everyone.
“Once upon a time, I, too, was struggling with my own health issues, which led me to do extensive research on the world of nutrition and navigating the challenges of balancing a healthy life,” the actress shares on her company’s website. “My journey led me through countless doctor referrals and limited treatment options that would impact my health completely.”
“This inspired me to share my experience and create ActivatedYou so that everyone can prioritize their health with nutrient-packed wellness solutions.”
In an effort to do just that, Maggie Q raises awareness for helping women manage gut health, various sugar cravings and the fact that—sometimes—you just have to indulge your craving.
We spoke to the actress about why she feels that way and what her various acting projects have meant to her. Keep scrolling to learn what she has to say.
First for Women: How has gut health impacted your life? Is there one thing in particular that has changed because of it?
Maggie Q: A lot of things have changed! But I think the most important is sustained energy and vitality. Of course, when you have less puffiness and look less tired, that’s exciting, too. But for me, it’s always about fixing what’s broken and seeing many systems of the body just run better—the way they are supposed to.
FFW: How did you come up with a diet that works for you? Are there some days that are harder to stick to than others?
MQ: I don’t eat processed food. I only eat what my body recognizes and breaks down easily. I don’t find it hard to stick with, only because I have lost a taste for the unnatural. I don’t desire it anymore. Do I occasionally indulge in a baked good that someone makes at work? Yes I do! But it’s rare, and most of the time my convictions are the same. I know how the other stuff makes me feel, and it’s not good!
FFW: How do you recommend people cure their sugar cravings, and is it okay for people to indulge every once in a while?
MQ: I think it’s actually vitally important to indulge once in a while, because joy matters!! So does connecting with family and friends. If you have standards most of the time, when you indulge it won’t feel so bad. It will feel like you deserve it. For sugar cravings, I drink more liquids! Hydrate, it helps.
FFW: In terms of acting, what do you take from each of the roles you’ve played?
MQ: I take away something from every job. They are all different, and I think they serve you at the moment. I carry a lot more wisdom than I did before.
FFW: What’s next for you?
MQ: I have a new show on Amazon coming out this year called Ballard.
It is expected to follow a Los Angeles Police Department detective named Renée Ballard is currently in production with Amazon Studios.
