Reese Witherspoon on casting a young Elle Woods

“I’m really excited because we’re going through the casting process right now and we’re picking who is going to play the young me,” Witherspoon shared. “It’s kind of a trip.”

Even 24 years after Legally Blonde (2001) first hit theaters, Elle Woods remains an icon—thanks to her signature pink wardrobe, fearless confidence and ‘I can do anything’ attitude. And now, Witherspoon is going through the process of choosing someone to play a young version of her iconic character.

“It’s so exciting too, to watch these young girls that are so filled with enthusiasm and excitement and completely… There’s so many good ones. That’s the hard thing because there’s so many good people to choose from,” she adds.

Elle Woods and her venture through Harvard Law School became a smash hit in theaters grossing over $140 million at the box office and getting nominated for two Golden Globes. Elle Woods, sorority president, applies and gets into Harvard Law after her wealthy boyfriend dumps her for being too blonde. Determined to win Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) back, Elle works hard to show Warner she is more than just the ‘dumb blonde’ he thinks she is.

Of course, Elle has a bit of a hard time fitting in, especially when she shows up in a bright pink matching skirt set and her little chihuahua, Bruiser, on her arm. But as she’s doubted by everyone at her new school, Elle shows them she is just as smart, if not smarter, than the rest.

What we know about ‘Elle,’ the ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel

Elle, the official Legally Blonde prequel series, was first announced in May 2024 through a Prime Video teaser.  The TV show will explore Elle Woods’ high school years, showcasing the experiences that shaped her into the confident, determined young woman fans fell in love with in Legally Blonde.

“Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do,” Witherspoon shared in a statement. “What could be better than that?! I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine – along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell – for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”

There is no release date yet for the series, but if you have yet to catch Reese Witherspoon as the OG Elle Woods, check out Legally Blonde and Legally Blond 2: Red, White & Blonde on Prime Video. You can also catch the actress in her new film, You’re Cordially Invited there, too!
