Applying makeup is not only a form of self-care that we love doing but it’s also a great confidence booster. Have redness? Foundation covers it up! Dealing with dark circles? Concealer masks it! Have lashes that look more limp than luscious? Mascara works wonders! But just like we tend to change our skin care as we get older, our makeup routine can be need of some tweaks too. So we turned to makeup guru Laura Geller for all of her advice when it comes to makeup for mature skin. Keep scrolling to see Laura Geller’s makeup tricks that will work for you.

Q: Is it necessary to use a primer when applying makeup?
I can’t stress enough the importance of primer! Primer acts as a barrier between your skin and the makeup, preventing your foundation or concealer from settling into wrinkles, which I know can be a struggle for ladies over 40. Everyone wants makeup to last all day long, and primer is the way to achieve that. The primer I created is a fan favorite and comes in a range of formulations tailored to address various skin concerns and preferences. My favorite is Laura Geller Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer Hydrate because it doubles as a moisturizer. -
Q: How can I prevent powder from settling into wrinkles?
First and foremost, always apply a primer before using any makeup! Primer creates a smooth base and will help avoid creasing. After priming skin, I suggest using a baked powder foundation, such as Laura Geller Double Take Baked Full Coverage Foundation (LauraGeller.com), to prevent caking or creasing further. Unlike regular powders, which can settle into wrinkles, baked makeup begins as a cream and is baked into a lightweight powder, so it’s weightless, creamy and hydrating—ideal for mature skin. This also stops the need to use both foundation and a setting powder, which can feel heavy and sink into lines, so skin stays looking smooth. -
Q: How can I make my eyes appear wider and brighter?
For the illusion of wider, more awake eyes, I like using a beige or white shade on my lower lash line along the inner rim or waterline. Both beige and white eyeliner will provide a widening effect, but beige offers a more subtle, natural look. Try Laura Geller INKcredible Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in the shade Beige to Beige. It’s a waterproof formula, which is key to make sure the color stays in place all day. To also help make eyes pop, I recommend applying a dab of highlighter near the inner corners of your eyes so they have an even brighter, wide-eyed appearance. -
Q: What’s the best highlighter for mature skin?
Highlighters that promise a glow, not a shimmer, are best for mature skin because glitter particles magnify imperfections while glow products create a blurring effect for a more youthful-looking complexion. To find this type of highlighter, look for liquid or balm formulas, such as L’Oréal Paris Lumi Le Glass and Glow Highlighter Stick. They sink into skin rather than sitting on top of it. As far as application, use it to accentuate areas you want to draw attention to, such as the high points of your face (your cheekbones, the center of your nose and under the eyebrows). I like using either my fingers or a sponge to apply highlighter because it helps it adhere better. The result is a natural, lit-from-within finish.
