Kristin Davis Scam: Why She Warns Against Lending Money to Boyfriends

Be careful out there, ladies because if Charlotte can be scammed by a man, anyone can. OK, so this actually happened to Charlotte’s real-life counterpart, Kristin Davis, but the same rules apply.

Kristin Davis recently revealed to actress Sarah Wynter on her podcast, Are You A Charlotte? that she was scammed out of $5,000 by a man she was dating in the ’90s. Davis recalled the out-of-work actor, who is now very successful, once ghosted her after she lent him $5,000 to help him get by. And in case you’re unfamiliar, ghosting is the practice of ending a relationship suddenly and without any explanation.

Kristin Davis shares her ghosting story from the ‘90s

I did one time date this out-of-work actor…” Davis began. “He was very talented, but, at the time, I had money because I’d been working, and I was at his house, and he had…like all those notices that you get when … you can’t pay your bills.”

What Davis did afterwards is what she regrets and warns other women not to do: she lent him money. The actress explained that she had some money at the time after starring on Melrose Place, so when she realized the man she was dating was struggling to pay his bills, she offered to help.

“It changed the dynamic in a horrible way…I probably should have known better,” Davis explained. “But I just felt like, ‘I can help, I should help this guy. He’s so talented’ — which he is. I lend him money. I think it was all of $5,000. So, I lent him this money and then, you know, he stopped calling. So, I’m like, ‘What the heck?’”

Kristin Davis offers words of wisdom to other women

Although ghosting wasn’t technically a term in the late 1990s, Davis didn’t take it lightly. “I remember going over to his apartment and banging on the door,” the actress shared. “But I was like, ‘Is he in there and pretending that he is not in there?’…later on he did call me. He’s like, ‘did you come to my house and bang on my door?’ And I was like, ‘well, yes’… I felt so embarrassed, like I was messy.”

As for what Davis tells fans to do in a similar situation: “Anyone listening, do not lend any money to [someone] you are dating, Okay, do not do it. No, you never get the money back. And it really irked me.”

Wynter, who starred in the Sex and the City pilot episode, suggested that Davis get her money back now and that she gets interest on it after waiting nearly 30 years.

“I just would love some acknowledgment or whatever, which is kind of a fantasy…He lives out in the country with some children, so I don’t think I want to show up there,” Davis explained.

But while Davis can’t do much about her past ghosting situation, her story comes as a warning to others in similar situations: Think twice before lending money to a person you are dating!
