The finale, which aired on November 26, 2024, was packed with breathtaking performances and emotional moments, none more touching than when Jenna’s husband, Val Chmerkovskiy, handed her the trophy—a never-before-seen moment for the show.

Reflecting on the night, Jenna shared with FIRST for Women, “[The moment of being handed the Mirrorball Trophy from Val was full of] so much sheer love and joy. It was a really special moment that I don’t think has ever happened before.”

Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson’s historic moment

As per tradition, the winners of the previous season of Dancing With the Stars handed the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy to the new victors. In a historic first, the torch was passed from husband to wife, as Jenna’s spouse Val won season 32 alongside Xochitl Gomez. Val was, understandably, ecstatic to see his wife clinch the trophy alongside Joey—the first Bachelor lead to ever win the competition—and footage of his reaction to Jenna’s victory quickly hit social media after the show.

So many people told me that they have videos of Val freaking out and I can’t wait to see them,” Jenna told FIRST after the show. “He’s been my number one supporter through this.”

Slightly tearing up, she continued, “He’s been mommy and daddy for us while I’ve been getting ready for this finale, so I’m just so grateful for him.” The couple, who got married in 2019, share a young son Rome Valentin Chmerkovskiy, who they welcomed in January 2023.  You can watch the moment Val rejoiced for his wife’s win here:

Joey and Jenna’s winning freestyle

Joey and Jenna’s freestyle performance was the culmination of their season-long journey. Choreographed to perfection, the routine blended Joey’s natural charm and passion for tennis and Jenna’s impeccable technique and choreography. However, the judges’ panel delivered a surprise when Carrie Ann Inaba gave the performance a 9, an unusual score for a finale freestyle. Despite the unexpected critique, Joey and Jenna’s exceptional performances throughout the season ensured their victory.

Joey credited much of his success to Jenna’s guidance and their shared determination. Their partnership resonated deeply with the audience, who were captivated by their growth as a team thanks to both the show and the behind-the-scenes footage captured by them both on social media. Quickly dubbed the “siblings” of the show thanks to their shared humor (and similar looks), Joey and Jenna quickly proved to audiences night one that they were the couple to watch. Kelsey Anderson’s unwavering support

Behind Joey’s journey to the Mirrorball was his fiancée, Kelsey Anderson. Her encouragement and presence throughout the season played a vital role in his success. “I think every time I look at her, I blow her a kiss before we dance. She looks way more nervous than I do,” Joey previously told FIRST about his fiancée’s emotional investment in the show. “I think the emotions just come from her being so proud of the fact that I’m doing my best and I’m fully in it.”

Joey also revealed plans to incorporate his newfound dance skills into their wedding, with Jenna even possibly contributing a step or two!
