Everybody Loves Raymond was a true comic force when it premiered: the Barone family is filled with some of the most hilarious characters, each with their own charm and idiosyncrasies. Together, the cast worked together to create hysterical scenes in each episode and made it one of the best sitcoms of the 1990s.
The series, which aired from 1996 to 2005, follows Ray Barone (Ray Romano), a popular sportswriter who just happens to live across the street from his overbearing mother Marie (Doris Roberts), uncompromising father Frank (Peter Boyle) and, sometimes, jealous brother Robert (Brad Garrett). Ray tends to keep a somewhat positive outlook, especially as he leaves the tough problems for his practical wife, Debra, to deal with.
On-screen, Marie had Frank, Ray had Debra and Robert eventually had Amy. But off-screen, the Everybody Loves Raymond stars had their own relationships, all of which are explored below.
Ray Romano and Anna Romano
Ray Romano has been married to his sweetheart since 1987, about nine years before Everybody Loves Raymond began airing. The couple first met in 1983 while they were both working as bank tellers in Queens. Although they were friends, Ray waited until after he was no longer a bank employee to ask his now-wife out.
“I always tell her she took a gamble because she went out with a guy who lived at home and rode a bike to work,” Romano said of his wife.
In 1985, the two began dating and tied the knot in 1987. The couple has four children together, welcoming their first, daughter Alexandra, in 1990. In 1993, the Romano’s had twin sons Matthew and Gregory, and their fourth son, Joseph, in 1998.
They’ve been together, happily married since, supporting each other along the way through everything, including Ray’s massive fame.
Patricia Heaton and Constantine Yankoglu
The couple married in 1984 but divorced after 3 years in 1987. There isn’t much information known about their relationship.
Patricia Heaton and David Hunt
This love match was right out of the movies. Patricia Heaton met her current husband, actor and producer David Hunt, after he sublet his apartment to her while he was away performing in a play. The couple began dating in 1988 and walked down the aisle in 1990.
Three years later, the duo welcomed their first child, Samuel, followed by sons John in 1995, Joseph in 1997 and Daniel in 1999.
The couple has worked together professionally in multiple capacities, including when Hunt joined his wife on-screen in Everybody Loves Raymond, appearing in three episodes of the series over the course of three different seasons. Hunt and Heaton have also started their own production company, FourBoys Entertainment, which is responsible for a few of Heaton’s projects, such as her 2019 series, Carol’s Second Act.
Heaton and Hunt have been together for nearly 35 years and seem to still be happily married.
Brad Garrett and Jill Diven
In 1999, Brad Garrett, who portrayed Robert on Everybody Loves Raymond, married his first wife, Jill Diven. The couple welcomed two kids over the years: son Maxwell in 1998 and daughter Hope in 2000.
They were married for seven years, filing for divorce in 2006, with Garrett explaining their decision.
“You can’t stay together for the kids, because kids know everything,” he said. “Sure, it’s daunting to have Daddy move out… Our No. 1 focus is our kids and parenting. We will always be friends because we will never be single parents. We will always be two parents”
Brad Garrett and IsaBeall Quella
A few years after he split from Diven, Garrett married his current wife, IsaBeall Quella. The couple met in 2008 in Boston, where Quella was working and ended up getting engaged after seven years of dating in 2015. Garrett and Quella tried to get married multiple times before their 2021 wedding, but had to postpone due to COVID, wildfires and a mudslide.
They officially tied the knot on November 11, 2021, and currently live in California with their two dogs. Garrett often shares sweet messages about his wife online.
“You are truly the most incredible human I’ve ever met,” Garrett wrote. “As not to embarrass you because I know your humility I’ll just say Thank You. For everything.”
Madylin Sweeten and Sean Durrie
As one-third of the Barone kids on Everybody Loves Raymond, Madylin Sweeten was a series regular from the very beginning, as were her twin brothers, Sullivan and Sawyer. Sweeten is currently married to Sean Durrie, who she began dating in 2014, as revealed on her Instagram.
Peter Boyle and Loraine Alterman Boyle
Peter Boyle found love on-screen as Frank Barone with Doris Roberts’ Marie, and in real life with wife Loraine Alterman Boyle. The couple met in 1974 while Alterman was a reporter for Rolling Stone on the set of Young Frankenstein and Boyle was in his full makeup for the film. They married in 1977, with legendary Beatle John Lennon serving as the best man.
They welcomed two children together, Lucy in 1980 and Amy in 1983. Both daughters have dipped their toes into entertainment, following in their parents’ footsteps.
Peter Boyle sadly passed away in 2006, not long after the series came to an end in 2005, and is survived by his wife and kids.
Doris Roberts and Michael Cannata
Doris Roberts wed first husband Michael Cannata in 1956. A year later, the couple welcomed their son, Michael Cannata Jr. By 1962, the couple had split up, likely due to the strain from her burgeoning acting career.
Roberts explained the reason for their divorce, saying in an interview, “Because my husband wouldn’t grow up and take on responsibilities. This is a terrible statement to make, but I’m going to make it. None of the men in my life ever wanted me to be successful. I think they thought I’d leave them.”
Doris Roberts and William Goyen
As Roberts’ career continued to soar, she tied the knot with her second husband, William Goyen, in 1963. The couple remained together for 20 years until Goyen’s death in 1983.
“My second husband died – a few years ago now. I was alone…” Roberts shared. “I loved this man very much. I didn’t know which way to turn. So, what I did was put a lot of my energy into the acting and it kept me occupied. I didn’t allow myself too much time to mourn because you have to move on.”
Monica Horan and Philip Rosenthal
Monica Horan, who portrayed Everybody Loves Raymond’s Amy, wed series showrunner Phil Rosenthal, in 1990. The couple met after Rosenthal saw Horan performing in a play, and they eventually joined the same comedy troupe. They figured out later that they had both been theater majors at Hofstra University.
The couple have two children together, Lily and Ben. Lily is a burgeoning actress and author and recently engaged, while Ben is a writer and producer and recently married. Both Monica and Phil often take to social media to share sweet family moments.
