Charm Bracelets Are Back in Style: DIY One or 8 Options to Shop

Remember those charm bracelets you wore in the 1990s and early 2000s? We have news for you: they’re back and better than ever. Lately, charm jewelry like necklaces, bracelets and even ones for bags have surged in popularity and are being worn more than ever since the early 2000s. They’re such a fun way to add a statement to any outfit that’s both creative and personable, and nowadays these bracelets come in a wide variety of styles and designs. Charm bracelets are one of the hottest new trends that have taken over the jewelry space, and can be bought in-store or even DIY’d at home. Why charm bracelets are trending again

Charm jewelry is certainly a more recent trend that just started really booming this year, more specifically in the past six months. While we saw more subtle and dainty jewelry trends in 2023 and the beginning of 2024 like permanent jewelry, charm bracelets are statement-makers and usually far from subtle. This aligns with the overall trend of statement jewelry coming back in style, as well as the nostalgic ‘90s trends that are in style.

In the ‘90s and early 2000s, Italian charm bracelets were a major trend. This style of charm bracelet differs from what we see trending today. Italian charm bracelets don’t have charms dangling from them; Rather, they’re made of charm “links” that connect to each other.

Today, we see the more traditional charm bracelets in style that consist of a chain link bracelet with charms hooked onto different links of the bracelet, dangling down. One of the best parts of a charm bracelet is that it is so customizable and personable, and you can choose charms that you feel fits your aesthetic, personality and style best.

How to DIY a charm bracelet

Participating in the charm bracelet trend doesn’t need to be expensive. While you can buy ready-to-wear charm bracelets, you can also DIY one at home for cheap. With a charm bracelet kit on Amazon, like this one that’s less than $20, you can make your charm bracelet custom to you and potentially pick up a new hobby. The best part of making your own bracelet is that you can add a single charm or attach as many charms as you’d like.

You’ll first want to measure out your bracelet according to your wrist size. Wrap the chain around your wrist, ensuring it isn’t too tight or loose. Then, choose your charms and attach to small jewelry jump rings using pliers, then attach to the links of the bracelet. Use pliers to attach a hook and clasp on the ends of the bracelet and wear on your wrist!

But another option is to look on resale sites like The RealReal or Poshmark to find unique, vintage charm bracelets. And if you have an older charm bracelet you’re looking to get off your hands, this is a great time to post a listing on these retail sites and potentially make a decent profit thanks to the popularity of the trend right now. For example, this Tiffany heart charm bracelet is selling for nearly $600 on The RealReal. Or you can always take your old piece to a jeweler for a cleaning and/or to estimate the value.
