Vampire slayers, we have some good news! Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) herself said that it might be time for us to finally reunite and slay the demons of the dark again! To learn what exactly the star had to say, why she decided to change her mind and the latest news on the anticipated reboot, keep scrolling.
What Sarah Michelle Gellar says about the ‘Buffy’ reboot
Ever since the widely popular teen drama ended in 2003, fans have been wondering if the cast would ever do a reboot, and while it seemed impossible for a while, that seems to have changed.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar took the time not only to promote her new show, Dexter: Original Sin, but also to comment on whether she would ever return to the role of Buffy.
“It’s funny. I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect. But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter [Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,” the actress said.
Gellar also took the time to share what the plot could potentially be about, saying, “It could be anything.
“It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

The announcement itself is a big shift from when Gellar told people she would never return to the role of Buffy because she thought it was time for someone else to take over.
“I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment,” the actress said. “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
Currently, there is no official confirmation that the Buffy cast will ever do a reboot, but since Gellar is maybe on board, that proves that there is still interest in the show and the plot over 20 years later.
If the cast does decide to reboot, though, there is a lot of speculation over whether creator Joss Whedon will be involved in a potential with it since, over the past couple of years, the screenwriter was accused of verbally abusing people on set.
“I know I would get angry, but I was never physical with people,” he continued. “I yelled, and sometimes you had to yell.”
As of the publication date, Whedon has yet to be formally charged and has since left Hollywood.
When did the ‘Buffy’ cast last reunite?
Despite there not being an official reboot as of now, the Buffy cast has gotten together quite a few times since the show ended.
In 2023, several of the stars got together to record the popular audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, which followed Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) after she returns from a world without Buffy and enlists Spike (James Marsters) to help her defeat the mysterious evil terrorizing her home.
“[I had] a little bit of apprehension when I first was asked to join, but those emotions and feelings, open wound feelings were immediately assuaged by Amber [Benson]’s pitch in that I heard her enthusiasm,” Carpenter said in 2023.

“What I mean to say is that in a lot of ways, Cordelia gave birth to Charisma and really informed who I am today, and it was so powerful that I was able to do very hard things at a very critical time in my life. And I think that is the ultimate Buffyverse story—finding out what your purpose is and using it to make the world a better place.”
Prior to the audio series, the entire cast—including Gellar—reunited for the show’s 20th anniversary in 2017.
“I’m so incredibly proud of what we all created,” Gellar said at the time. “Sometimes you need distance to really understand the gravitas of that. I appreciate everything about that job. As an actor, all you ever want to do is leave your mark—you want to do something that affects people.”
