Best Sippy Cup for Toddlers

As a shopping editor, I get to test a lot of products. That’s so I can relay the best of the best to you, our readers! For the longest time, I had difficulty finding a sippy cup that worked for our family. Personally, I was looking for something that had anti-leaking properties (thanks, child who loves to toss things without abandon when she’s done with them).

Little did I know my daughter had her own list of ideals when it came to a sippy cup. It didn’t take long for me to discover she would only drink from something that was 1) easy to do so from; 2) easy to hold; and 3) looked a lot like something I drink out of.

And so, I present to you, two of the best sippy cups tested by a toddler and loved by a mom.

Infantino My 1st Tumbler

My daughter uses this 9 oz. tumbler from Infantino on a daily basis. It looks just like my 40 oz. Stanley FlowState™ Tumbler, but it’s way easier to carry around (ILY, Stanley). The silicone lid fits snuggly into the silicone cup and the straw attachment pops out easily for cleaning.

My favorite feature of this tumbler is the soft silicone straw that protrudes out of the lid. It has a leak-resistant flap that opens with ease when my toddler drinks, but stays shut when the tumbler tips over, hits the floor of the car, etc. At under $10, this is a no-brainer purchase!

Infantino My 1st Tumbler

$9

Designed for little hands, this silicone 9oz tumbler with handle combines functionality and style in a compact size. It encourages little ones to drink independently and stay hydrated while looking as fashionable as mom.

  • Leak-resistant straw
  • Toddler-friendly handle
  • Dishwasher friendly
  • Water tends to squirt out when you put the lid on

BrüMate Leap

I’m a big fan of BrüMate. And by that I mean I own almost every kind of drink vessel/holder that the brand offers. You can imagine my delight when they shared the release of Leap, their leakproof tumblers for kids.

Leap is the first kid’s 100% leakproof water bottle that’s compatible with both cold and iced carbonated beverages. It’s like BrüMate’s groundbreaking Era leakproof straw tumblers, but for kids (ages 4+). I let my almost-two-year-old use it and she loves it!

My only bone to pick with this sippy cup is that the leakproof function isn’t built-in. What I mean by that is you have to twist the lid to the setting. Since it’s impossible to predict when my toddler will decide to give her cup a toss, this requires a bit of preventative action. But hey — having the option is nice, especially given the Infantino cup is leak-resistant (AKA capable of leaking).

Munchkin® Miracle® 360 Trainer Sippy Cup with Handles

My daughter has since outgrown these cups and prefers something that looks more like my water bottle now. But I would be remiss if I didn’t mention these trainer sippy cups.

They were a lifesaver when we were first weaning her off of bottles. I loved them because — you guessed it — they’re totally leakproof! They’re also foolproof in that your child can drink from any side of the cup and access liquid. These are a must for parents.

How to find the sippy cup that’s right for you: what to consider

Now, I realize these choices aren’t going to work for every child. They’re finicky beings, kids! As such, I’m obliged to share with you the sippy cups I was personally a fan of — they just didn’t gel with my kid and her habits.

When it comes to finding the sippy cup that’s right for your kid (and your sanity), there’s plenty to consider. From material preferences (BPA-free plastic or stainless steel?) to features like leak-resistant lids and soft spouts, you’ll find dozens of options out there.

To help make the choice a little easier, I’ve included a few more of the sippy cups that were tested in my household below. You’ll also find what I liked and disliked about each!

Pros: Fun color choices; leak- and spill-proof; volume markers for drink tracking; drink from any angle

Cons: My daughter had a hard time sucking anything through the straw when we first started using this cup (which should tell you something about the leak-proof-ness of this cup!). She got better with it around a year-and-a-half. This won’t be the case for all toddlers, but worth a mention!
