Recognise and Challenge Negative Self-Talk
People with depression often have negative thoughts about themselves and the world. They may quickly dismiss themselves with statements like, “Everyone hates me, or “I’m ugly.” Identifying and challenging those thoughts with questions like “What do I know that contradicts what I’m thinking?” or “What would I say to a friend in a similar situation may provide better, objective insight, and help shift to more positive self-talk. This will help banish depression.
Reachout to Family and Friend
Isolation can worsen depression. When depressive symptoms arise, it’s important to reachout to loved ones. Although it may seem easier to keep to oneself, staying wrapped up in your own thoughts can lead to harmful behaviours, including unhealthy addictions or suicidal thoughts. Talking with people close to you can prevent a lot of pain and struggle.
Commit to Regular Exercise
Exercise enhances endorphins and improves mood. Even a 10-minute walk can provide as much benefit as a 45-minute workout. Regular exercise can help combat depression symptoms before they start. Exercise stimulates the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which may directly improve mood.
These are just a few of many self-help strategies that can help you beat the symptoms of depression.
