Lorelai Gilmore — we mean Lauren Graham — recently shared her thoughts on a potential Gilmore Girls reboot, and her answer will certainly excite fans of the show.
“I would, yes! I always say yes because it’s the best part I ever had, and I love doing it,” Graham said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “It was the perfect material at the perfect time with the perfect writer, and it just means so much to me.”
Graham went on to address the love she still receives for the series, which came out 25 years ago, and how they consider her a parental figure for themselves.
“It can be strange at times,” Graham added, “because on the one hand, some people are starting to say, ‘You raised me,” and I’m like, ‘I hope there were other adults involved.’ Then on the other hand, people are like, ‘Oh, I just have the show on in the background. It puts my dog to sleep, we’re not even listening anymore.’”
About ‘Gilmore Girls’ and the 2016 reboot
The iconic 2000s drama series first premiered in October 2000 on The WB and went on for seven years. Characters like Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, along with their many love interests, captivated audiences for the duration and longer. And now that Gilmore Girls is available on streaming services, the series has had a revival, luring in a whole new generation of fans.
In 2016, the cast reunited for a four-episode reboot titled Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life. This miniseries followed the Gilmores, and the residents of Stars Hollow, throughout four seasons of change. The sequel ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving fans wondering and wanting more. But, alas, it’s been nearly a decade since the release of the revival series with no second part in sight.
Lorelai and Luke reunite for an advertisement
While we haven’t gotten an official reunion since the 2016 miniseries, Lauren Graham and Scott Patterson, who plays her love interest Luke Danes, did reunite in 2024 for a Gilmore Girls-themed Walmart ad. The two, along with Sean Gunn as Kirk, returned to Stars Hollow for a sweet and nostalgic commercial that brought joy to Gilmore Girls fans everywhere.
“It’s always a little surreal [returning to Stars Hollow], because we were back where we’ve been so many times,” Graham shared in an interview after filming the commercial. “It was a particularly odd day for me because there’s just so much familiarity with that character and seeing Scott and being in that place.”
Patterson, too, had an enjoyable experience revisiting Stars Hollow. He shared about Graham, “I’ve never worked with anybody with a better skill set, more grit and just this incredible stamina among the other things that she brings with her humor and her kindness.”
The ‘Gilmore Girls’ cast discuss another reboot
Just because there haven’t been any real plans for a reunion since 2016, does not mean it hasn’t been discussed. Following the filming of the Walmart ad, Patterson addressed the subject.
“If anybody could write a compelling story with the characters that mature, it would be [creators] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] and Dan [Palladino],” Patterson added. “I wouldn’t even venture a guess how they would do it or what it would look or feel like, but I’m sure it would be fantastic in every way.”
And in case you’re wondering Graham’s thoughts, don’t worry, because she is prepared in case a reunion comes around. The actress revealed in 2021 that she has a Gilmore Girls clause in each of her new acting contracts, explaining if a Gilmore Girls reboot were to come around, she will be able to join no matter what project she is in.
“I put that window into all my new jobs, just in case,” she said. “I don’t want to start any new rumors. It’s not for any concrete reason, except that I have a loyalty and an openness to working with [Sherman-Palladino], first of all. And because we could never have predicted that in the past. So that door is open.”
She then added, “The shows are so restrictive now. So, we’re trying to just carve out some pockets, just in case.”
