A very merry Christmas

This is Maggie May—and she is my joy every day. She was rescued from Texas and sent to the East Coast during the pandemic. Sadly, she spent six months in a dark shelter during lockdown and was only let out to walk and eat. We rescued her and she was very shy and timid for a full year. Finally, about six months later, she started slowly warming up and wagging her tail. This is a special photo because it’s one of the first times she hopped onto the couch to snuggle. She loved the warm fireplace and looking at the Christmas lights. She seemed relaxed—finally. It was such a happy holiday! —Jan Geiger, Belmar, NJ

A sweet ring

A modest ring, with its tiny diamond, is a big influence in my life. It was my great-grandmother’s wedding ring, gifted to me by my grandmother, Kathryn. Grandma Kay always had a zest for life and loved me unconditionally. Whenever I need a boost, I rub it for comfort and strength. —Karen Curtiss, Chicago
