7 Ice Skating Movies Perfect for Winter Nights

If you’ve ever found yourself watching Olympic ice skaters, wondering why your parents didn’t force you to become a star athlete during your youth, then allow these seven ice skating-oriented movies to satisfy your desires. From inspiring true stories to sappy, ice-bound romances, these films are perfect for a cozy winter weekend. Don’t be surprised if these movies make you want to lace up a pair of skates and hit the ice yourself—after all, practice makes perfect.

The Mighty Ducks (1992)

Okay, okay—we know that this 1992 flick falls under the hockey category as opposed to ice skating specifically, but can you blame us for including this winter classic in the lineup? Emilio Estevez stars as a lawyer who, after being arrested for drunk driving, must coach a youth hockey team as part of his community service.

Miracle (2004)

Again, how can we leave this hockey movie off this list? If it takes place on the ice, who are we to discriminate? This 2004 film tells the true story of the 1980 men’s Olympic hockey team and their victory over the Soviet team when they competed at that year’s Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. Kurt Russell took the lead in this film as the tough-as-nails coach Herb Brooks, and this early 2000s classic goes down as one of our favorite skating films.

Go Figure (2005)

When a young figure skater discovers that a famed coach is teaching at a nearby school she can’t afford, she goes to whatever lengths necessary to learn under the accomplished instructor.

Blades of Glory (2007)

This laugh-out-loud early 2000s flick stars Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as two ice skating rivals who, after an altercation on a podium, are banned from their category and stripped of their medals until they realize a loophole that allows them to compete again—as partners, of course. This raunchy comedy is sure to leave you in stitches.

Ice Princess (2005)

A teenage girl has her sights set on attending Harvard, but her growing passion for figure skating changes her course as she pursues a new dream. Starring Michelle Trachtenberg, Joan Cusack, Hayden Panettiere and Kim Cattrall.

The Cutting Edge (1992)

A high-strung, stuck-up figure skater finds an unlikely partner in a former Olympic hockey player as she pursues a gold medal. Though they lack chemistry at first, something eventually starts to grow between the two.

I, Tonya (2017)

I, Tonya stars Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding, the famed figure skater whose reputation is tarnished when her ex-husband executes a violent plot against one of her competitors, Nancy Kerrigan, making for a scandal that lives on for decades.
