A few years ago, I started having more negative effects when drinking wine. Sometimes I get headaches or feel super dehydrated while I’m still drinking a glass. This is different from an alcohol hangover one might have after drinking too much.

A sommelier told me that this reaction was probably more likely due to additives than the wine itself, which makes sense since it doesn’t happen with every glass – just some of them. She told me to focus on wines from Italy and France because they have the strictest rules about additives. I’ve had really good luck having no negative effects or hangovers when ordering European wines in restaurants.

I recently learned about Avaline, which was founded by Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power (founder of Who What Wear, Versed, and MERIT) in 2020. Avaline makes a range of transparently produced wines. Each bottle is made with 100% organic grapes, has 0 grams of sugar per serving, and is free from unwanted additives like colors and concentrates. Their message is “Wine with Nothing to Hide.™”

As far as standards go, these have as high – or higher – standards as the Italian wines I’ve been drinking.

Avaline Wine Review

Here are the key points that make Avaline stand out:

Made with 100% organic grapes

All of the grapes found in every bottle of Avaline are 100% organic, with no traces of synthetic pesticides or insecticides. Avaline only partners with winemakers who prioritize sustainable farming. They are also all vegan, which surprisingly means that all wine is not.

Zero sugar

Avaline wines are fermented “dry,” which means there is no residual sugar present. All Avaline wines have 0g of sugar per serving.

No unwanted additives

Winemakers are allowed to add up to 73 different additives to their wines, including Megapurple and other concentrates to manipulate the color, flavor and mouthfeel of their wines — Avaline never does.

My Avaline Wine Review

While ingredient transparency, sustainability, and organic growing are all important to me, so is diversity and flexibility. I want to be clear that while I love what these wines stand for, I’m still going to drink and buy other wines – like from our local Virginia vineyards! And they do all still have alcohol, which is something I try to minimize on a daily basis for my health.

So with those disclaimers stated, I have loved every bottle I’ve opened. Every varietal I’ve tried has been a crowd pleaser (I will also say that I am not super picky about wine as long as it’s in the “normal” range!).

I could go on about how “crisp, clean, and floral” the whites are or that the reds have “notes of wild raspberry and cherry,” but I find wine descriptions written by normal people to be a bit eye-rolly! So go to the website and read them written by the professionals : ) But from a tasting notes review perspective, the wines have been sophisticated and complex.

The prices are in the $24-30 range, before you add in any promos. Avaline has been great to keep stocked at home for opening when it’s just me sipping slowly and I’d like to have something very pure and high quality. If I’m going to a party (or hosting a party), I might take a less expensive European bottle or a local Virginia wine to share.
