The new Netflix comedy, You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, tells the hilarious story of two friends with big bat mitzvah plans. But boys and middle school drama get in the way, obvi, and things go downhill. Fast. (A bar or bat mitzvah, in case you’re not familiar with it, is a Jewish rite of passage to adulthood that usually involves a religious ceremony and a big celebration on your 13th birthday.)
The movie stars comedian and actor Adam Sandler, along with his daughters, Sunny and Sadie Sandler. Sunny is one of the main characters, a teenaged girl named Stacy Friedman, who is having a bat mitzvah. Her IRL older sister, Sadie, also plays her stage sister, Ronnie Friedman, and her dad plays… her dad. The movie is hilarious and so relatable—it involves Sunny’s BFF kissing her crush, and a major rift developing them just before the biggest night of her young life. And seeing a big star’s daughter’s on screen naturally brings up questions.
So, who are Sadie and Sunny Sandler? Here’s what you need to know:
How many kids does Adam Sandler have?
Adam Sandler only has two daughters with his wife, Jackie. The two met on a movie set in 1999 and got married in 2003. Jackie, who is also a well-known actress, converted to Judaism in 2000, before the couple got married. And Sadie and Sunny have been raised Jewish.
“[Fatherhood’s] fun. It’s great. I love that kid…I was dying to do it,” Adam told reporters after his eldest daugher’s birth, per People.
The couple just celebrated their 20th anniversary, and Adam marked the occasion with a sweet post. “Your ‘I do; was the best gift of my life. My heart has been yours since the first second I saw you and I love and appreciate your devoted soul more and more each day. Us. The kids. Lets keep going and going babe. Lots of love to give you. Always,” he captioned the photo from their wedding day.
How old is Sadie?
Sadie Madison Sandler was born in 2006, and she’s currently 17 years old. When she had her own bat mitzvah in 2019, Adam Sandler apparently pulled some strings to get Maroon 5’s Adam Levine to play, per People.
“I text him, ‘I’m sorry to do this to you, my kid’s getting bat mitzvahed Saturday night. Would you mind coming and singing a few tunes? It would be incredible,'” he said on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
How old is Sunny?
Sunny Madeline Sandler was born on November 2, 2008. She’s just 14 years old. Fun fact: Sunny had her own bat mitzvah last year, CNN says, which means she was perfectly primed to play this role.
And her party was apparently quite the star-studded event, with celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Lautner in attendance, and singers like Charlie Puth and Halsey performing during the after party. Even Halsey was impressed with the party.
“First of all, it was the craziest bat mitzvah I’ve ever seen in my life,” she told Jimmy Fallon, per People. “As you would expect from Adam Sandler. It was like… I mean, it was like Coachella.”
Sadie made her movie debut in 2008.
Sadie has been in a bunch of her dad’s movies, starting with playing “the girl riding on goat” in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan in 2008, per IMDB. Since then, she’s been in both Grown Ups movies, the voice of Winnie in Hotel Transylvania, and Hubie Halloween.
Sunny has also had cameos in Adam Sandler movies.
Yup, little sis Sunny has appeared in a ton of her dad’s movies, including Grown Ups, Blended, and Murder Mystery, IMDB says. But her talents also extend to the musical realm, too. Sunny sang “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman during one of her dad’s comedy shows in 2019, according to ET.
She also performed Taylor Swift’s “Lover” alongside her sister and dad later in 2019, and both girls definitely have impressive voices:
And even with that singing prowess, it seems like both daughters want to act in more movies after You’re So Not Invited. “I hear sometimes in the house, ‘I wanna be in a movie’ and I say, ‘You are, you were in this, this and this’ and they go, ‘Not yours.’ I go, ‘Oh, Daddy’s not good enough!’ ” Adam said on The Drew Barrymore Show earlier this year. “They wanna do their own thing one day.”
